another step to recover lost or forgot root password
im using slax LiveCD
boot via cdroom with slax LiveCD
mount linux system eg. /dev/hda1 to /mnt/hda1
run command chroot /mnt/hda1
run command passwd to change your forgot root password
type exit to quit, and reboot
voila
